Motorized blinds

Moved by a motor, no cord to pull

Made to measure in our workshop

Price on visit

If a blind is out of reach, or its cord hangs by a child's bed, motorized blinds are worth paying for in a Dubai home. A small motor moves the blind, so there is nothing to pull. A blind within reach, opened once a day, rarely needs one. We measure for free at your home.

What are the three parts of a motorized blind?

  • Ivory roller blind lowered most of the way in a window recess, seen from below at an angle, its open roll at the top, palms and villas below

    The motor

    Hidden in the roll

A roller blind's motor turns inside the tube the fabric winds onto. Roman, Venetian and vertical blinds usually hold it in the headrail along the top.

  • Light grey roller blind lowered from a closed white cassette fixed above a window, towers showing through the glass below its bar

    The power

    A closed cassette

A wired motor runs from a power point at the window, fitted by your own electrician or one we arrange on request. Roller blinds can also run on a battery motor; ask us whether yours can.

  • Silver Venetian blind lowered over the top half of a study window, its slats open, towers through the glass, a pale wood desk at the right

    The control

    Stopped halfway

A handheld remote, a wall switch, or one of each, paired to the motor when the blind is fitted.

When are motorized blinds worth the cost?

The cot is next to the window

A looped cord or chain is a known danger to small children. For homes with young children, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's advice is to choose cordless window coverings. A cordless blind raised by hand meets that advice for less. A motor also lets you lower it for a nap without stepping into the room.

Your desk faces the west sun

By mid-afternoon a west window puts glare on your screen and heat in the room. With a motor, you lower a sunscreen roller from your chair the moment the glare starts. The screen clears and the view stays. Keeping the glass shaded is one of DEWA's own summer tips.

The window starts above your head

You probably set the blind above the stairs once, the day it was fitted. A motor lets you lower it from downstairs when the sun reaches it. We've done motorized jobs in villas, apartments and penthouses, some with double-height windows. Our fitters bring scaffolding for those, charged separately.

You rent the flat

A wired motor needs a power point at the window as well as screws for its brackets, so the permission rules below cover both. Each blind is made for this window, so it suits your next flat only if a window there matches.

Your team meets behind a glass wall

When the projector starts, the meeting room should go dim at once, so give its blinds one shared switch. We fit offices, warehouses and hotel apartments, with fire-rated fabric on request.

Which blinds can take a motor?

Roller, zebra, Roman, Venetian and vertical blinds can all take a motor. Choose the type for the window first, since it decides the light and the look. Of the five, a motorized roller blind has the fewest moving parts.

We make all five as motorized blinds.

Which motor and controls suit electric blinds?

Start from the controls you already use at home. Tell us which before the visit, and we recommend a motor to suit them.

  • Somfy

The make that carries our longest motor warranty.

  • Dooya

The make in our priced example further down this page.

  • General Tuya motor

The lower-cost choice of the three.

Controls

  • Remote control or wall switch

Press to open or close the blind, or stop it part-way.

  • Mobile app

Moves the blind from your phone, or at set times in most apps.

  • Voice and smart home

Alexa, Google or Apple Home, or a smart-home system you already have.

What happens to a motorized blind when the power or Wi-Fi goes?

A motorized blind usually stays where it stopped until its motor can run again. When the Wi-Fi goes down, the remote and wall switch usually keep working, because they reach the motor by radio. App and voice control come back with the Wi-Fi.

When the blind stops
If this goesWhat it means for the blind
The mains powerThe motor stops; some motors let you move the blind by hand, so ask at the visit
Your Wi-Fi or hubRemote and wall switch usually still work
The remoteKeep the motor's make and model with your invoice, so a replacement can usually be paired
The motor or remote itselfWe repair both, including on blinds we didn't install

Is your home ready for motorized blinds?

Before you accept a quote for motorized blinds, look at the power at each window, the landlord's consent if you rent, and your tower's rules for contractors.

  • Power: if you're renovating, ask your electrician for a power point at the top of each window that will have a wired motor. Otherwise we arrange an electrician on request, or a roller blind can take a battery motor and need no power point. If a ceiling has to be opened, closed and repainted, that is charged on top.
  • Renting: changes to a rented home need the landlord's permission under Article 19 of Dubai Law No. 26 of 2007. Under Article 21, you must return it in the state you rented it, as Khaleej Times explains. Some contracts permit drilling, provided you fill the holes before handing back the keys. This is information, not legal advice.
  • The tower: building management may want paperwork before anything is fitted. We arrange what the building asks of us as the contractor. Anything it needs from you as owner or tenant, such as a no-objection certificate (NOC), you request and pass to us.

A curtain in front needs room to pass the blind, and can take its own motor: see motorized curtains.

For the blind itself, pick a roller blind for a plain finish, a blackout roller for a bedroom, or a Roman blind for soft folds. Zebra blinds give daylight and privacy from one fabric. A wide sliding door suits vertical blinds; for anything else, see our other blinds.

How is a motorized blind priced?

We price a motorized blind at the free home visit rather than by the square metre alone. The motor is priced on top of the blind, and its make, your controls and the power at each window all change the total.

As a guide, one 2 × 3 m roller blind with a Dooya motor starts from 1,320, made and fitted. Remotes are priced on top.

A Somfy motor, another blind type or a ceiling opened for power changes that figure. Each blind needs its own motor, so on a small blind the motor is a larger share of the price. Your quote holds for 30 days, and our price guide shows what each part of a quote covers.

From first message to working blinds: what are the steps?

The Curtains Dubai measures your windows at a free home visit, makes the blinds in its own workshop, and supplies and installs the motors and controls.

  1. Message or call us

Name the rooms, and any window that sits out of reach or in a child's room. WhatsApp us a photo of each window before the visit.

  2. Your free home visit

At your home we measure each window and its recess, and you pick the blind, its motor and its controls. We work anywhere in Dubai and bring fabric samples to hold against your own light. A deposit confirms the order.

  3. Made to your measurements

We make each blind to size in our own workshop in Dubai. Fitting follows 3 working days after you confirm the order; a big job can take longer. Have a move-in day? Give us the date with your approval.

  4. On fitting day

We mount the brackets, hang the blinds and set where each one stops, then you try every blind yourself. Afterwards, the salesperson who handled your order stays your contact. At the free home visit, start with the window you can't reach or the child's room, and decide the others from there.

Anything else, ask on the phone: 050 257 7765

How much do motorized blinds cost in Dubai?

The price of a motorized blind in Dubai is made of five parts: the blind, its motor, the power, the control and the fitting. Ask which of the five a single total covers; our quote lists each on its own line. One 2 × 3 m roller blind with a Dooya motor starts from 1,320 with us, remotes extra.

What are the downsides of motorized blinds?

The biggest downside of motorized blinds is cost, since each blind needs its own motor and power. A motor is usually slower than a quick pull, and app and voice control stop when the Wi-Fi does. Weigh that against a cord gone from a child's room, or a blind you can finally reach.

Can you motorize the blinds I already have?

We don't add motors to existing blinds: each motorized blind we fit is made new. Some roller blinds can take a motor inside their tube. Roman, Venetian and vertical blinds usually need a new headrail as well, so compare that cost with a new blind's.

Are motorized blinds noisy?

At rest, a motorized blind makes no sound; you hear a low hum only for the seconds it moves. That matters most over a bed, at 6 am or at nap time. Before choosing a motor for a bedroom, ask for its rated noise level or to hear it run.

What warranty comes with motorized blinds?

Warranty on motorized blinds usually differs by part. We give 5 years on a Somfy motor and 2 years on a Dooya or general Tuya motor. Our fitting, the blind's making and its mechanism carry 2 years each; sun fading isn't covered. Ask any maker whether a motor's warranty starts on fitting day or on the date stamped on it.
