Linen curtains in Dubai, pure or blended

Linen curtains

Daylight through a woven texture

Made to measure in our workshop

Price on visit

If your Dubai home is mostly tile, glass and pale walls, linen curtains add a woven texture, and the weave glows when the sun is behind it. Pure linen creases the most, a blend less, and linen-look polyester hardly at all. Measuring is free at a home visit, and then our own workshop sews each curtain to size.

What do the texture, creases and lining tell you?

  • Close-up of cream linen against a bright window, thicker slub threads and the open weave lit from behind

    The texture

    The yarn

Real linen's yarn has thicker spots along it, which give the surface its slightly irregular look.

  • Slate-blue linen wave curtains closed beside a window, side light on soft creases, a wooden desk and white chair at right

    The creases

    In side light

Judge creases on a hanging length, as at your window, not on a folded swatch.

Hidden from the room, a lining should follow the folds and never sag below the hem.

Is linen right for your home?

The afternoon sun lands on the sofa

In a west-facing living room, late sun hits the linen's window side, and a deep colour fades there. By late July, the UV readings published for Dubai are 11 to 12. Ask for a lining: it hangs nearer the glass, so the sun falls on it first.

Sunrise reaches the nursery

June sunrise comes around 5:30 am, and that early light passes straight through unlined linen. Linen blackout curtains have a blackout lining sewn on the window side, so the fabric itself lets no light through. The nursery keeps the same linen as the rest of the house.

The glass runs up two storeys

On a drop several metres long, pure linen's small first-wash shrink can lift the hem off the floor, so check the care label before washing. Most of our fabrics come 280 to 320 cm wide, so a drop up to that size needs no seam. Our fitters bring scaffolding for glass this tall, charged separately.

Three quotes all say linen

One may be pure linen, one a blend, one linen-look polyester: each a fair choice. Ask for the fibre in writing on every quote, with a blend's mix, so you compare the same cloth before you compare the totals.

Do linen curtains block light?

Sun shows through unlined linen. Your choice of lining sets two things: how dark the room gets and what people outside see at night.

Illustration, not a measurement

  • Unlined

By day the weave screens the room from people outside; after dark, with lamps lit inside, they can see shapes through a light linen.

  • Lined

A lining behind the linen dims the room and keeps people from seeing in after dark, but the glow is gone.

  • Blackout-lined

The fabric stops the light. What is left comes round the edges, so ask for a track that reaches past the window frame.

Pure linen, a blend or linen-look: which suits you?

For a room where the texture matters and the curtain is rarely washed, choose pure linen. Where curtains need cleaning often, as in a kitchen or a child's room, linen-look polyester is the easier choice. A blend sits between the two.

We make curtains in pure linen and in linen blends; pure linen is the costliest of the two.

Lining, heading, weight: what does each change?

The lining controls the light, the heading sets the track or pole, and the weight sets the depth of the folds.

Lining

Olive-green linen pinch-pleat curtains closed wall to wall in full folds, no glow through the cloth, a white armchair at right

Lined, against the sun

  • Unlined

Looser folds, and lighter to wash.

  • Lined

    Fuller folds.

  • Blackout-lined

For bedrooms, and for anyone who sleeps by day.

  • Thermal lining or interlining

An extra layer against the heat, which we can add to linen curtains you own.

Heading

Three curtain headings

  • Wave

Soft, even curves along a ceiling or wall track.

  • Pinch pleat

Sewn pleats at the top, on a track.

  • Eyelet

Rings in the linen slide on a pole; light shows above it.

Weight

A heavy linen

  • Light

An open weave; the sun comes through.

  • Medium

    Screens the room by day.

  • Heavy

Deeper folds, and more load on the track's fixings.

How can you tell real linen from linen-look?

Three checks usually tell real linen from linen-look: crush it, hold it to the light and touch it.

  • Crush a corner: squeeze it in your fist for a few seconds, then let go. Real linen keeps a sharp crease, while polyester mostly springs back.
  • Hold it to the light: in real linen the thicker spots follow no pattern. A linen-look weave or print often repeats one.
  • Touch it: real linen feels cool and a little crisp. Linen-look polyester is usually smoother and warmer in the hand.

Try the same checks on sheer linen, hung by day for privacy. For a night worker or a napping baby, see linen in a bedroom and the blackout lining that keeps the room dark. For glass two storeys tall, motorized curtains open and close a drop you can't reach.

Linen can also hang from eyelets on a pole. It comes in deep colours, reds among them. Where a curtain won't fit, linen makes a Roman blind instead. Compare how the headings look, or browse the rest of our curtains.

Why is there no published rate for linen curtains?

Linen has no published rate with us: we price it at the free home visit. A blend's price follows its mix, so one rate can't cover pure linen and every blend.

Once you've picked the fibre and weight, we measure each window and price it separately, each part on its own line. The quote holds for 30 days. To see how those lines add up, read how a curtain quote breaks down.

How does a linen order run, start to finish?

The Curtains Dubai measures your windows at a free home visit, makes your linen curtains to measure in its own workshop, and fits them.

  1. Send a message or call

Say which rooms, which way each window faces, and any linen you've already liked, with photos if you have them. Home visits run Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 7 pm.

  2. The free home visit

We come anywhere in Dubai, measure every window and settle the fabric, lining and heading with you. Our linen samples come too, so you see each one in your room's light.

  3. Made in our workshop

A deposit confirms the order, and our Dubai workshop cuts each curtain for one window. Fitting follows 3 working days after approval; big or complicated jobs take longer. Have a moving-in date? Raise it before you approve the order.

  4. Fitting day

We fit the track and hang each curtain, then even out the folds. Draw every one yourself before the fitter leaves. Book the free home visit, and you'll know which linen and which lining suit each window.

Linen curtains: cost, care, lifespan, damp and heat

Anything else, ask on the phone: 050 257 7765

How much do linen curtains cost in Dubai?

Eight things set the price of linen curtains in Dubai: the fibre, weight, lining, fullness, heading, track, drop and fitting. Fullness is the extra fabric gathered into folds: 2.5 times the window's width for an eyelet or wave heading, 2 times for pinch pleat. We price linen window by window once it is measured.

Why are linen curtains so expensive?

Linen is spun from flax, and flax takes more work to turn into yarn than cotton. So pure linen usually costs more per metre than cotton or polyester. The difference grows on tall, wide windows, where one curtain uses many metres. A blend or linen-look polyester brings the price down.

Do linen curtains shrink when washed?

Pure linen can shrink, most on its first wash. Check the care label: some linen can be washed cool and gently, and some is dry-clean only. A lined curtain is safer dry-cleaned, because the lining and the linen can shrink by different amounts. Cleaning isn't something we do, so find a dry cleaner who handles linen.

How long do linen curtains last?

Linen curtains have no fixed lifespan in years; the window matters most. Strong sun on the window side fades linen and weakens its fibres. Damp folds and frequent washing add wear too. A lining, dry folds and gentle cleaning all help it last. Our 2-year warranty covers the stitching and making, though not sun fading.

Why do linen curtains smell musty near the window?

Humid air leaves linen damp, and folds that stay damp start to smell. The National Centre of Meteorology has forecast humidity up to 90% on the coast. A curtain touching the glass, or shut for weeks in a closed-up flat, dries slowly. Keep it off the glass, and air the folds when you get back.

Do linen curtains keep the heat out?

Unlined linen stops little heat: sun through the weave still warms the room. A lined linen curtain, drawn before direct sun arrives, keeps out more. DEWA's own summer advice puts curtains on the list of ways to shade sunny glass. In August the mean daily maximum in Dubai is 42.1°C (Dubai Meteorological Office figures, 1977 to 2015).
